Well No. 15

Nueva Asunción Methodist Church

The small community of Nueva Asunción has recently been homesteaded and is populated by hardy pioneer folks.  The common name for the community is Oga Lata, which is a Spanish/Guaraní name which means "sheet metal house" - clearly one of the early families in the community had a house of old roofing tin.  The community was an annex of the Methodist Church of Quinta Linea for over 5 years with services were held in the house of Brother Ino Garay.  Brother Ino donated a very nice building site (40 meters by 100 meters) and a donor from the United States provided the funds to by the materials to build the church.  The brothers of the church provided the labor and last year a lovely little church was completed.  The local lay leader, Brother Arsenio Valdez preaches there with the support of Pastor Felix Godoy of Quinta Linea Methodist Church.

There is no water system in this area and only a few houses have hand dug wells.  The soil is very sandy and the hand dug well of Brother Ino collapsed, causing him to have to dig another - with the water level 33 feet deep this is clearly dangerous work.  Using our new hydraulic drilling equipment we were able to drill the well to 148 feet in only 2 days - a world record (at least in our little corner of the world)!!  The well turned out to be a great producer - 60 gallons per minute with only about 16 feet of drawdown (for more details click on the technical page).

Completed well head with our trademark - you just HAVE to write in wet cement!

Brother Ino and Sister Tranquilina have 5 daughters and 2 sons, so there are quite a few little houses cropping up around the main house as the girls get married and start their own families.  Needless to say, water and sanitation facilities are in great demand.  In addition to the well, we constructed the elevated water tank to provide pressure and a nice "baño moderno" complete with flush toilet and hot shower.  Beside the bathroom we built a clothes washing station for all the mothers to use.  In addition, spigots were placed in front of the church and at the fence line beside one of the neighbor's house to minimize the distance they will need to carry water buckets.

To show appreciation to Brother Ino and Sister Tranquilina for donating the church site we agreed to install a spigot beside their house.  The next day Tranquilina's nephew came and asked if maybe we could also install a sink for her to wash dishes - since the cost is only about $30 of course we agreed.

It was a great project and will make a big difference to the community of Nueva Asunción.
